Quantifying Energy Reduction and Thermal Comfort for a Residential Building Ventilated with a Window-Windcatcher: A Case Study

Previous studies on window-windcatchers have shown their effectiveness in capturing the prevailing wind and redirecting it into a building, increasing actual-to-required ventilation ratio by 9%, above what is required American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). However, effect implementing proposed system energy performance, costs, thermal comfort has not been studied. Therefore, here, we investigate test implementation window-windcatcher typical residential using validated DesignBuilder model. Compared to base case (no window-windcatcher), total annual consumption entire building (Etot,b), consequently cost, reduced approximately 23.3% (i.e., from 18,143 kWh/year 13,911 kWh/year) when window-windcatcher. The reduction discomfort hours estimated be 290 h, which corresponds an average monthly 24 h.
